"To have the best information possible at any given time. To have a technical grasp of their medium sufficient to realize their intentions. To act with perspicacity as they inform the culture at large. To realize that they have a specialty – as do physicists, attorneys, electricians, etc..."
- Lewis Baltz, "An Interview with Lewis Baltz." Interview by Lewis Baltz, Winter 1972. An Interview with Lewis Baltz, by Duncan Forbes (London: MACK, 2020) 10.
As summer approaches find shade, as summer approaches cool off, as summer approaches touch the concrete in the morning as it will only heat up and work its way through the grout at night. As summer approaches make something, as summer approaches visit a studio, as summer approaches call a friend, as summer approaches map out a day of destinations from South LA to Chinatown, Chinatown to Echo Park, Echo Park to Downtown, downtown to LAX, LAX to Denver, Denver to Omaha. As summer approaches read a book, as summer approaches write prose, as summer approaches paint a wall, as summer approaches try a table saw, as summer approaches make mistakes, as summer approaches make more mistakes. As summer approaches feel free to climb something, maybe a ladder, maybe a mountain, just a thought. As summer approaches don’t take yourself too seriously, as summer approaches take yourself quite seriously. As summer approaches just remember that it will not last long. As summer approaches think about this roof. As summer approaches no wall will protect us from this high noon sun.

Joachim Castañeda is an American multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Studying fine art at San Francisco State University, he continued his study at Metafora E’scola di Arte Contemporani in Barcelona, Spain. Since returning to his native California his work has centered around the idea of perception and how it has broken the connection between fact and truth. Resiliency is a big theme in the artist's work, by showing wear and tear Castañeda pushes a discourse of a history unknown, where the viewers' perspectives are brought in to participate. It is by way of his art background from figure painting, mural making, and graphic design, Castañeda’s works are on an ever changing plane arriving just at the edge of empathy.

A fourth-generation Southern Californian, Robin Donaldson was born and raised within the SoCal surf and skate culture. Before founding ShubinDonaldson, he received a Bachelor’s in Studio Art at UCSB, focusing on painting and printmaking. He then attended the Southern California Institute of Architecture, receiving his Master of Architecture and winning the Henry Adams Medal. During his SCI_Arc studies, Robin began working with Morphosis Architects and served as the Project Architect on the Crawford Residence. In 1990, Donaldson founded ShubinDonaldson Architects. Today he lectures at AIA events, academic institutions, devotes time to AIA advisory boards, and serves on community planning advisory boards across Southern California.
Donaldson’s creative force is at the heart of advancing SD’s design ethos. He leads the firms’ investigations between buildings and topography/landscape integration, representation and drawing sensibilities, and unique fabrication methodologies. His interest in exploring new possibilities for conventional building typologies also includes leading ShubinDonaldson’s research and development efforts.

Vincent Pocsik is an American artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He holds a Master's Degree from Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles. Vincent is interested in how the invisible feelings of human life converse with the visible interactions between us and our environment. His main medium of exploration is wood. His choice of wood is because of his belief that it holds truths about the world within it. His process to explore this balances old and new fabrication techniques to breathe new life into materials while holding onto the richness of the past.

Levi Robb is an artist and architect based in Iowa. Robb’s work explores the entanglement of person and context — time and atmosphere. With a focus on the formal objectivity of place, the work is influenced by human interface with environment, landscape, and artifact. The emanation of the work embodies a dichotomy between permanent and impermanent objects and mark making. Human relationship with site-based artifacts, and the interrelationship between the material and immaterial, are often common underlying themes throughout his work. Through the analysis, manipulation and reinterpretation of latent items and specific spatial conditions the work takes on a continual timeline with an inherent connection to the past. Acts of drawing, printmaking, sculpture and installation become tools for him to reassign aesthetic value to detritus and discarded material. This process yields a unique body of formal objects that reflect on material culture and concretize the idea of contemporary relics.
Robb holds a B.Arch. from Iowa State University and has spent periods of time studying and working in Rome, Italy and the American Southwest. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in both public and private collections. In 2018 Robb completed artist residencies at the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Strong City, Kansas and at Seljavegur in Reykjavik, Iceland.
