LONG AGO, FAR AWAY
Vincent Pocsik, 2018
It is Pocsik's belief that every material holds an energy within it. That energy can be stripped away, harnessed and empowered by the processes put upon it. For the installation, LONG AGO, FAR AWAY, he will take the wood that was used as shoring in the building of the Dakota Access pipeline and do all of the above with it.
The construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline has been a polarizing endeavor in an increasingly polarized climate. For this reason, it would be very easy for Pocsik, with his biases, to choose a side. But this is not his intent and he will instead create an emotional environment where he will do his best to act as the wood might and express its story. This all with the understanding that wood is a collector of energy and a layering of history, rather than that of ideals.
The installation will consist of several sculptures. All of the work will be made on site, thus the scale will be dependent on the limitations of time and space.

About the Artist:
Vincent Pocsik is an American artist and designer who lives and works in Los Angeles. He attended graduate school for architecture at Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles. Shortly after graduating, he opened a studio in downtown Los Angeles, which developed into the studio he runs today.
Vincent’s work balances old and new fabrication techniques to breathe new life into materials while holding onto the richness of the past. This process is influenced by the desire to push the traditional boundaries of mediums such as wood, glass and metal so each work transforms into an anatomical expression and presence of its own.
