BROKE EVEN WHEN I BET THE FIELD
Joachim Castañeda, 2022
"We sitting in here -- I'm supposed to be the franchise player, and we in here talking about practice. I mean, listen: We talking about practice. Not a game. Not a game. Not a game. We talking about practice. Not a game. Not the game that I go out there and die for and play every game like it's my last. Not the game. We talking about practice, man. I mean, how silly is that?"
- Allen Iverson. News conference. 7 May 2002.
Beyond the West
to enter behind the façade of 'California Dreamin'
no more dreams
no more memories
only a space for presence
a certainty that is never fixed
welcome to a 'Midwestern Landscape'
a Gambler is always prepared to go all in
You are back on the I-15 and it could not have been soon enough, barely made it out of ‘Sin City’ alive. Lady Luck was with you for a minute but you know they do not keep clocks in there. She fled the field yesterday and that tenth of bourbon cooled down the heater hours ago. One more night, one more run and it all falls apart. Then again, you are always up and the score will stay unsettled for many nights to come, time for distance, time for separation. Thank you for the road and thank you for that wide open landscape, come to me I-70 as Denver could not come soon enough. Out of the game, back to the process and that space between Denver and Omaha gets shorter. Let the mind settle but it does not, too many plans and way too many expectations. But do not fret, go back to what you know, go back to the basics. Maybe it was when you were young, when you never second guessed yourself, you just played. The game came to you and you came to it, never a difference between game or practice, process or result, it was all the same. Damn, you are so close to Lincoln only a couple hours out, but that storm is coming in hot and you might not get out. However, you go all in and hit the radio as "The Gambler" plays and Kenny leads the way.
If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done
- Kenny Rogers, "The Gambler." The Gambler, Don Schlitz (Nashville, TN: United Artists Group, 1978) track 1.

About the Artist:
Joachim Castañeda is an American multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles. Studying fine art at San Francisco State University, he continued his study at Metafora E’scola di Arte Contemporani in Barcelona, Spain. Since returning to his native California his work has centered around the idea of perception and how it has broken the connection between fact and truth. Resiliency is a big theme in the artist's work, by showing wear and tear Castañeda pushes a discourse of a history unknown, where the viewers' perspectives are brought in to participate. It is by way of his art background from figure painting, mural making, and graphic design, Castañeda’s works are on an ever changing plane arriving just at the edge of empathy.
